Without Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on the roster, Kevin Durant stands out as the most recognisable and likely face of Team USA in the FIBA World Championship.

A fluid scorer capable of putting up points both inside and out, the forward will be one of the most – if not the most – dangerous offensive players to take the court during the tournament.

“He's one of the outstanding players in the game today, without question,” said USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo.

“I’ve been saying that he’s the whole package and I believe he is. Some people lead verbally, some people lead by just a presence, others by performance.”

Durant's combination of size, skills, work ethic, shooting and understanding of the game is rare.

After just three years in the NBA, he is already considering as one of the biggest stars around the league.

This past season, he was selected as an All-Star for the first time in his career and averaged 30.1 points per game to become the youngest player to lead the league in scoring.

He guided the Thunder to a 50-32 record and to their first NBA playoffs appearances where they pushed the champions Los Angeles Lakers.

At the age of 18, Durant almost made the Team USA roster for the FIBA Americas Championship in 2007.

Now, at 21, he will be one of the team's leaders as Team USA looks to regain the world title without any members of the 2008 Olympic team.
